A young woman in a green wool dress and long gloves sits at a table in a hat shop, turning a wide-brimmed hat in her hands while finished hats bloom on stands around her and crowd the front of the picture. Degas worked on the canvas between 1879 and 1886, the largest of his many pictures of milliners, and prepared it with repeated drawings and pastels of the single figure, changing her pose and costume. Whether she is a customer or an employee is deliberately unclear: her dress is good enough for a lady, but she wears no hat of her own, and the yellow hat with green trimmings is positioned so that it seems to sit on her head. The high, tilted viewpoint and the way the hats outweigh the person are typical of Degas's cropped, off-balance compositions. It belongs to the Art Institute of Chicago's Lewis Larned Coburn Memorial Collection.
