Harvesters bind sheaves of wheat in a broad, sunlit river valley under a warm evening sky, with haystacks, trees and distant hills; the canvas is nearly three metres wide. Inness finished it in 1865, as the Civil War ended, and the title, the bountiful harvest and his statements at the time express his confidence in Union victory and the prosperity to follow. It was also a manifesto. Against the grand, literal panoramas of Church and Bierstadt, Inness offered familiar farmland charged with feeling, painted in enriched colour and softened strokes, with none of their exotic subject matter or heightened detail. The approach would carry him towards the tonal, almost visionary landscapes of his late career. George A. Hearn gave the painting to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1894.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
