Adele Bloch-Bauer, the wife of a Viennese sugar industrialist, sits enveloped in a gown that dissolves into a field of gold ornament: eyes, spirals and rectangles drawn from Egyptian and Byzantine sources. Only her face, shoulders and clasped hands are painted naturalistically. Klimt worked on the commission for about three years and finished it in 1907, using gold and silver leaf over oil, the same technique as The Kiss. It is the only portrait he painted twice of the same sitter. Seized by the Nazis in 1938, the painting was returned to the Bloch-Bauer heirs in 2006 after a landmark restitution case and bought by Ronald Lauder for the Neue Galerie in New York, where it is now on permanent view.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A field of gold ornament with one naturalistic face, best given a dark wall and the room's main sightline, dining room or bedroom at 24×36. Brass lamps and dark wood furniture pick up the leaf; a thin black frame keeps it from competing.
