A nude woman reclines on a bed and looks straight out at the viewer while a maid offers a bouquet wrapped in paper and a black cat arches at the foot of the bed. Manet painted it in 1863 and showed it at the Salon of 1865, where it caused one of the great scandals of the century. The pose quotes Titian's Venus of Urbino and the subject recalls Goya and Ingres, but the orchid in her hair, the black ribbon, the slipper and the name Olympia itself marked her as a Parisian courtesan, and her cool, appraising gaze refused the idealised nude on which academic art rested. The model was Victorine Meurent, then nineteen. In 1890 Claude Monet organised a public subscription to buy the painting for the French state so that it would stay in France; it now hangs in the Musée d'Orsay.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
