A barmaid stands behind a marble counter laid with bottles of champagne and beer, a bowl of oranges and a glass of roses, in front of a great mirror that reflects the crowded balcony of the Folies-Bergère music hall, the chandeliers and, at the far right, her own back and a man in a top hat who seems to be addressing her. The reflection does not line up with the figure, and the discrepancy has been debated since the picture was shown at the Salon of 1882. Manet painted it in his studio with a real barmaid named Suzon posing behind a table of bottles; he was already ill and died the following year. It was his last major work. Samuel Courtauld bought it in 1926, and it is the centrepiece of the Courtauld Gallery in London.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Champagne bottles, marble counter and a great mirror make this the picture for a bar cart, dining room or kitchen with a drinks shelf, at 24×18 or 32×24. Black frame on a dark or warm wall so the chandeliers and bottles glow.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×18. Prints at 16×12, 24×18, 32×24 in — 16×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×18 above a console or sideboard; 32×24 as the statement piece above a sofa or headboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
