A naked woman sits in a wooded clearing beside two fully dressed young men, her discarded clothes and a picnic of fruit and bread in the foreground and a second woman bathing in the stream behind. Rejected by the Salon jury of 1863, Manet showed it that year at the Salon des Refusés under the title Le Bain, where it drew laughter and outrage and became the main attraction. The composition is borrowed from the Renaissance: the central group follows a Raimondi engraving after Raphael, and the idea comes from Titian's Concert champêtre in the Louvre. What shocked people was the contemporary dress, the absence of any mythological excuse and the flat, abrupt contrasts of light and dark on a canvas the size normally reserved for history painting. Donated by Étienne Moreau-Nélaton in 1906, it is one of the cornerstones of the Musée d'Orsay.
