Mountains are torn up and a whole city, towers and all, is flung upside down into a chasm as lightning splits a blood-red sky and tiny figures tumble into the abyss. Martin painted this apocalypse between 1851 and 1853 as the centre of his final triptych on the Last Judgement, with The Plains of Heaven and The Last Judgement, all now at Tate Britain. It follows the sixth chapter of Revelation, with its earthquake and darkened sun. His son Leopold said the idea came to his father on a night journey through the fires of the Black Country, and some have read the collapsing city as Edinburgh with its castle rock; the connections remain debated. Three metres wide, it was built for crowds and spectacle. The three canvases are reunited at Tate Britain.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
