Sacred painting
Until the seventeenth century the Church was the greatest patron of painting in Europe, and the greatest painters answered with their greatest work. Michelangelo painted the Sistine ceiling lying on scaffolding between 1508 and 1512; Caravaggio's Calling of Saint Matthew, in a Roman side chapel, is still in the place it was painted for. Rembrandt's Return of the Prodigal Son, finished near his death, is among the most tender paintings ever made.
The works in this collection
Michelangelo's The Creation of Adam; Raphael's Sistine Madonna; Caravaggio's The Calling of Saint Matthew, Supper at Emmaus and Judith Beheading Holofernes; Rembrandt's The Return of the Prodigal Son and The Storm on the Sea of Galilee; Bosch's The Garden of Earthly Delights; Bruegel's The Tower of Babel; Holman Hunt's The Light of the World.
On the wall
The Creation of Adam is wide and reads from across a room; it is the obvious choice above a sofa. The Caravaggios suit a dark study; the Sistine Madonna and The Light of the World are upright and quiet and suit a bedroom or a landing.
