A deep indigo field is covered with scrolling pale stems and flowers in coral, rose and buff around a central medallion, framed by a cream inner band and a wide red outer border of leaf scrolls. The design takes its name from carpets William Morris made for the Ionides family's house at 1 Holland Park in London in the 1880s. The Met dates this example to the late nineteenth century; it is hand-knotted in wool with Turkish knots, 25 to the square inch, and is more than five metres long. Morris set out to make England independent of the East for hand-knotted art carpets, weaving first at Hammersmith and then at Merton Abbey, where there was space for large commissions. It came to the Met through the bequest of Frank A. Munsey in 1927.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole sample beneath original typography set in-house. The design is in the public domain.
