A fair-haired woman in profile, her head encased in an elaborate jewelled headdress and pendants, is set within a circular frame edged with lace-like ornament against a background of stylised flowers; strands of her hair escape beyond the circle. Mucha designed the pair of Byzantine Heads, a blonde and a brunette, in Paris in 1897 for the printer F. Champenois. He regarded Byzantium as a source of Slav culture and drew on its mosaics, icons and jewelled vestments throughout his work; the lace border recalls the folk craft of his native Moravia. The panels were enormously popular and were reproduced in many formats, including decorative tin plates. The impression reproduced here is in the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
