A woman in a flowing white dress, her auburn hair crowned with roses, stands among pink, white and yellow blooms that climb the full height of the tall, narrow panel. Mucha designed The Flowers in Paris in 1898 for the printer F. Champenois, who issued the four panels, Rose, Iris, Carnation and Lily, as colour lithographs for framing. Two of the designs had been shown as watercolours at his Salon des Cent exhibition the previous year. Each flower is personified by a woman whose dress, colouring and pose echo its character, and the plants themselves are drawn naturalistically, with less stylisation than in his posters. The set sold so quickly that Champenois also issued a smaller version with all four panels on a single sheet. It remains one of his best-loved series.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
