A woman with loosened hair cups a hand to her ear and listens, her eyes half closed, to birds singing in the branches around her under a night sky, the moon rising within the ornamental halo at her back. Mucha designed the panel in 1898 for The Arts, the four-part series printed by F. Champenois in Paris; its companions are Painting, Poetry and Dance. Rather than depicting a musician with an instrument, he chose the sound of nature at night as the essence of music, matching the flower, the evening star and the wind of the other three panels. The figure's pose, the flat decorative ground and the rhythmic line of hair and drapery are characteristic of the style he had developed since the Gismonda poster of 1894. The set was reissued in several sizes.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
