A figure on a bridge clutches its head and opens its mouth as the sky behind it streams in bands of orange and red over a blue-black fjord; two companions walk on, unaware. Munch made the first painted version in 1893 in Oslo, working on cardboard in a mix of oil, tempera, pastel and crayon. He later recorded the experience behind it: walking at sunset near Ekeberg, he felt the sky turn to blood and heard what he called an endless scream passing through nature. Munch produced four painted and pastel versions and a lithograph; this 1893 painting, in the National Museum of Norway, is the earliest and best known. The figure's hollow face and the swirling landscape made it a founding image of Expressionism.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Orange and red sky over a blue-black fjord is a strong, unsettled image, better in a study, office or hallway than a bedroom. Black frame on a dark or neutral wall at 16×24 or 24×36; it does not want pairing with anything softer.
