The boulevard Montmartre under afternoon sun, the long perspective of trees, awnings and apartment blocks flooded with warm light and the carriages below reduced to quick dashes of dark paint. Pissarro painted the boulevard fourteen times between February and April 1897 from a window of the Grand Hôtel de Russie, working through different weather and times of day in the serial manner Monet had made famous with his haystacks and cathedrals. Where the winter-morning version in New York is grey and damp, this one is bright and busy, the kind of Paris street the Impressionists had celebrated for a quarter of a century. It belongs to the State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg. Together the series stands as the most sustained record of the modern city by the eldest of the Impressionists, made in his late sixties from a hotel window.
