The Boulevard Montmartre seen from above at night, its wet roadway streaked with the reflections of gas lamps, shop windows and cab lanterns, the traffic reduced to dabs of dark paint and the rows of lit windows converging toward a distant vanishing point. Pissarro painted it in February 1897 from a room in the Grand Hôtel de Russie, where he had installed himself to paint the boulevard in every weather and hour; it is the only night scene in a series of fourteen views and the only nocturne of his career. He was sixty-six and had largely given up working outdoors because of an eye condition. The brushwork is loose and quick, closer to his early Impressionism than to the pointillist manner he had tried in the 1880s. It entered the National Gallery in London in 1925.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Wet streets streaked with gas lamps make this a nocturne for low light: a den, dining room or the wall by a bar cart at 24×18. Black frame on a dark blue or charcoal wall; pair it with the Van Gogh night scenes.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×18. Prints at 16×12, 24×18 in — 16×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×18 above a console or sideboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
