The boulevard Montmartre on a grey winter morning in early 1897, carriages and omnibuses threading between bare trees and the tall Haussmann façades, seen from high above. Pissarro, who had left his rural home at Éragny to spend time in Paris, took rooms at the Grand Hôtel de Russie and marvelled that he could see down the whole length of the boulevards, almost a bird's-eye view. Between February and April he painted fourteen views of the boulevard Montmartre to the left and two of the boulevard des Italiens to the right, in rain, snow, sun and at night. This canvas keeps the morning's muted light, the street a soft wet grey animated by small dark strokes of traffic. It was given to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1960 by Katrin S. Vietor in memory of Ernest G. Vietor.
