A richly dressed couple stand hand in hand in a Bruges bedroom, the man in a fur-lined tabard and broad hat, the woman in a green gown gathered up in front, with a small dog at their feet, oranges on the sill, a brass chandelier with one candle and a convex mirror on the back wall that reflects the whole room and two visitors at the door. Above the mirror Van Eyck wrote in Latin that he was here in 1434. The man is usually identified as Giovanni di Nicolao Arnolfini, an Italian merchant working in Bruges. Every surface, from the wooden clogs to the rosary beads, is rendered with the precision that the new oil technique made possible. The panel has been in the National Gallery in London since 1842.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A bedroom scene full of small precise detail, from the clogs to the mirror, so hang it where it can be studied at arm's length: a bedroom, landing or study at 16×24. Black on a warm wall; the green gown likes deep red.
