Nicolas Rolin, chancellor of the Duchy of Burgundy, kneels in a fur-trimmed brocade robe at a prayer desk, facing the Virgin, who presents the Christ Child as an angel holds a jewelled crown over her head; behind them a loggia of columns and carved reliefs opens onto a walled garden of lilies, irises and roses and a minutely painted city on a river, with hazy mountains beyond. Jan van Eyck painted it in about 1435, when Rolin was around sixty, for his parish church of Notre-Dame-du-Chastel in Autun, and the city in the background is probably meant to suggest Autun. Two small men look out over a parapet into the view, and the bridge, boats and passers-by are rendered in tiny detail under an even light. The picture remained in the church until it burned in 1793, spent a period in Autun Cathedral and came to the Louvre in 1805. A conservation treatment led to an exhibition devoted to it at the Louvre in 2024.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
