A soldier in a red coat and a broad beaver hat sits with his back to the viewer, so close that he fills the left of the picture, while a girl in a yellow bodice laughs at him across the table with a wine glass in her hand. Light pours through the open window on the left and lands on her face; behind her hangs a large printed map of Holland and West Friesland by Balthasar van Berckenrode. Vermeer painted it around 1657, early in his career, and the exaggerated difference in scale between the two figures has led many writers to suggest he was looking through a camera obscura. X-rays show he first gave the girl a large white collar and later extended her cap to frame her face. It belongs to The Frick Collection in New York, which also owns Girl Interrupted at Her Music and Mistress and Maid.
