The room as subject
Vermeer painted the same corner of the same room for most of his career, the light always from a window at the left. Two centuries later Hammershøi did the same in a Copenhagen apartment, emptying the rooms until only light and a door remained. Van Gogh painted his bedroom in Arles three times and wrote to his brother that it was meant to express rest.
The works in this collection
Vermeer's The Astronomer, Woman in Blue Reading a Letter and Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window; Van Gogh's The Bedroom; Degas's The Dance Class; Hammershøi's Interior with Sunlight on the Floor.
On the wall
A painted room inside a real one: these suit bedrooms, studies and quiet corners, hung at eye level and not too large. 16×24 is right for most; The Bedroom is also offered edge to edge.
