A young woman tips a glass of wine to her lips while a man in a hat stands over her with the jug in his hand, waiting to refill it. A cittern and sheet music have been set aside on the chair, and in the leaded window a stained-glass figure holds a bridle, the emblem of Temperance, a quiet warning that nobody in the room is heeding. Vermeer painted it around 1658 to 1660, when he was in his late twenties, taking the bright, deep interiors that Pieter de Hooch was developing in Delft and making them richer and more elegant: a patterned table carpet, a gilded frame, a coat of arms in the glass. The faces are smooth and the brushwork calm, which is why it is read as one of his first fully mature works. It is in the Gemäldegalerie of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.
