About William Merritt Chase
William Merritt Chase was born in Indiana in November 1849, trained at the Royal Academy in Munich, and returned to New York in 1878 to become the city's most celebrated painter and teacher. His Tenth Street studio, crammed with tapestries, brass and curiosities, was itself a subject; he painted portraits, still lifes of fish, park scenes in Brooklyn and Central Park, and, from 1891, the sunlit dunes of Shinnecock on Long Island, where he ran the first important American school of outdoor painting. He taught for decades at the Art Students League, the Pennsylvania Academy and his own Chase School, and his pupils included Georgia O'Keeffe, Edward Hopper and Charles Demuth. A founder of the Ten American Painters in 1898, he died in New York in October 1916. His beach and garden pictures, white dresses against sand and sky, print as light, airy colour for a bedroom or seaside living room.
