About Manuel Orazi

Manuel Orazi was born in Rome in October 1860 and moved to Paris, where from the 1890s he illustrated books and magazines, Le Figaro illustré, L'Assiette au beurre, Je sais tout, and the occult Calendrier magique of 1895, and designed posters for the theatre and the decorative arts. His poster for Loïe Fuller's theatre at the Exposition Universelle of 1900, with the dancer dissolving into a column of colour, his Palais de la Danse for the same fair, his Théodora for Sarah Bernhardt in 1902, with its Byzantine mosaics, and his sheet for La Maison Moderne, Julius Meier-Graefe's gallery of modern decorative art in the rue de la Paix, are the fullest expression in the poster of the Paris Art Nouveau. He also designed jewellery and furniture for the Maison Moderne and illustrated Flaubert's Salammbô and Pierre Louÿs's Aphrodite. He died in Paris in October 1934.
