About Abbott Handerson Thayer
Abbott Handerson Thayer was born in Boston in August 1849, grew up in New Hampshire painting animals, and studied under Gérôme in Paris from 1875. Back in New York he became known for portraits and then for the pictures that made him famous: his own children, usually his daughter Mary, painted as winged angels and enthroned virgins, ideal figures with real, serious faces. He lived from 1901 at Dublin, New Hampshire, below Mount Monadnock, which he painted at dawn in his last years. An ardent naturalist, he worked out the theory of countershading, the idea that animals are darker above and paler below to cancel their shadows, and his 1909 book with his son Gerald on concealing coloration fed directly into military camouflage in the First World War. He died at Dublin in May 1921. His angels print as serene, luminous figures for a bedroom, hallway or nursery.
