A wedding feast is crowded into a barn at harvest time: the bride sits quietly before a green cloth hanging with a paper crown above her head, two men carry bowls of porridge on a door taken off its hinges, a man fills jugs with beer, two pipers play, and a small boy in a feathered cap licks a plate in the foreground. Two sheaves of grain with a rake hang on the back wall. Bruegel painted the panel in about 1567, late in his career, when he favoured large, solid figures close to the picture plane. The food is plain, bread, porridge and soup, and the scene is thought to record peasant wedding customs of the time closely; the identity of the groom has never been settled, and suggestions include the man pouring beer and the man handing out plates. The panel was cut at the bottom and later extended by about five centimetres. Archduke Ernst bought it in Brussels in 1594, and it hangs in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 36×24. Prints at 18×12, 24×16, 36×24 in — 18×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×16 above a console or sideboard; 36×24 as the statement piece above a sofa or headboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; natural wood lightens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
