A goldsmith in a red robe sits at his counter weighing a ring on a small balance for a richly dressed young couple; the woman, in a gold brocade gown and white headdress, waits with her hand on her companion's arm, and the shelves behind display rings, brooches, coral, pearls, metal vessels and raw materials, while a convex mirror on the counter reflects two men in the street outside, one carrying a falcon. Petrus Christus signed and dated the panel in Bruges in 1449: the inscription at the bottom reads, in translation, Master Petrus Christus made me in the year 1449, followed by his emblem. The painting may have been commissioned by the Bruges goldsmiths' guild, whose patron is Saint Eligius, and it was long titled as a picture of the saint because of a halo later found to be an addition and removed. It has also been read as a betrothal or ideal bridal couple choosing a ring. The panel came to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York with the Robert Lehman Collection in 1975.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 16×24. Prints at 12×18, 16×24 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; natural wood lightens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
