A man in dark blue rows a boat with a yellow interior across a bright blue bay, his back to the viewer, while a woman in a blue dress crosshatched with pink holds a baby in the bow. Cassatt painted it in the winter of 1893–94 at Antibes on the Riviera, where she spent several seasons with her mother, and the hard Mediterranean light pushed her toward bolder, more decorative colour than she used in Paris. The high horizon, the dark figure pressed against the picture plane and the oblique view into the boat come from Japanese prints, and the arcs of citron and blue cut the canvas into almost abstract shapes. It is one of her largest and most ambitious paintings, and it was the centrepiece of her first solo exhibition in the United States in 1895. The painting came to the National Gallery of Art in Washington with the Chester Dale bequest in 1963.
