A small girl in a white dress and tartan sash sprawls back in a big blue armchair, one hand behind her head, while a scruffy little dog dozes in the matching chair beside her and a bright room opens out behind. Cassatt painted it in 1878, soon after Degas had invited her to join the Impressionists; the child was the daughter of friends of his, and he worked on the background himself. Cassatt submitted it to the American section of the 1878 World's Fair in Paris and was furious when the jury turned it down. Rather than a miniature adult, the girl is a person with a mood, bored or sulky or simply tired of behaving, and that candour is what makes the picture feel modern. It is thought to have been among the works she showed at the fourth Impressionist exhibition in 1879. It belongs to the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
