Saint Jerome sits writing at a desk at the far end of a low wooden room, sunlight falling through round-paned windows across the floor; a lion and a sleeping dog lie in the foreground, and a skull rests on the window ledge, a large gourd hangs from the beams and slippers, books and an hourglass are set about. The lion belongs to Jerome's legend, in which he took a thorn from its paw. Dürer engraved the plate in 1514, signing and dating it on a small tablet on the floor. It is the third of his Master Engravings with Melencolia I and Knight, Death and the Devil, and the three have been read as the medieval spheres of life: the knight the active and moral, Melencolia the intellectual, and Jerome the contemplative and theological. The steep perspective from an off-centre viewpoint makes the room feel close, as if one stood just inside the door. This impression is in the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 16×24. Prints at 12×18, 16×24 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; natural wood lightens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
