Old women are brought from a barren rocky landscape at the left, on carts, in wheelbarrows and on men's backs, to a large rectangular pool; they bathe and emerge at the right as young women, who are led to a tent to be dressed and then join a party of dancing, music and feasting in a green landscape. The fountain at the centre carries figures of Venus and Cupid. The contrast between the bleak rocks and the fertile meadow and trees on the right follows the transformation from age to youth. Lucas Cranach the Elder signed the limewood panel with his winged serpent and dated it 1546, late in his career. The subject belongs to a long tradition of images of a magical spring, and many details reflect the real bathing culture of the time and the belief in the healing power of certain baths. The picture belonged to the Prussian royal palaces and hangs in the Gemäldegalerie of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 36×24. Prints at 18×12, 24×16, 36×24 in — 18×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×16 above a console or sideboard; 36×24 as the statement piece above a sofa or headboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; natural wood lightens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
