A white cat sits on the sill of an upstairs window, looking out through the wooden lattice over open rice fields to a small white Fuji, as geese fly across the evening sky. In the distance a line of people crosses the fields toward a festival, while a towel and a few belongings lie by the window inside the quiet room. The print is number one hundred and one in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the eleventh month of 1857. The room is in the Yoshiwara, Edo's licensed pleasure quarter, which stood among the Asakusa rice fields, and the crowds are on their way to the Tori-no-machi festival held in the eleventh month. Hiroshige tells the scene entirely through the cat and the view, with no people in the room; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
