Long lengths of freshly dyed cloth in deep red and blue hang in looping swags between tall poles, drying across an open ground framed by weeping willows. Behind them rises a fire watchtower, and a few figures move along the path below. The print is number six in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the ninth month of 1857. The Hatsune riding ground in Bakuro-chō, an old horse-training ground, was used by local dyers to dry their cloth, and Hiroshige turns that everyday sight into a bold pattern of colour. The sky shades from deep blue at the top to a pink glow at the horizon; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Swags of crimson and blue cloth among soft green willows, for a living room, sewing room or bright hallway at 16×24 in natural wood. It pairs with The Dyers' Quarter in Kanda, another print built on drying fabric.

Size. We'd hang this one at 16×24. Prints at 12×18, 16×24 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
