The island church of San Giorgio Maggiore floating in the Venetian lagoon at the end of the day, its campanile rising against a sky of orange and violet, with the dome of the Salute and the mouth of the Grand Canal faintly visible at the right. Monet visited Venice only once, in the autumn of 1908, and every evening in late November he and his wife Alice took a gondola out to watch the sunsets he called unique in the world. He painted the church in several lighting conditions, and this canvas, viewed from the waterfront, belongs to a small set of dusk versions; another is in the Artizon Museum in Tokyo. The Welsh collector Gwendoline Davies bought it in 1912 straight from Monet's exhibition of Venetian scenes in Paris and later bequeathed it to the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff.
