Long timber rafts drift down a broad pale blue river, each guided by a single raftsman with a pole, while a ferry boat crowded with passengers crosses near the willow on the left bank. The far shore is a dark, grey-green mass with the roof of Zenkōji temple tucked among the trees. The print is number twenty in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the second month of 1857. Kawaguchi lay on the Arakawa river north of Edo, and timber was floated down it to the city's lumberyards. The steep diagonal of the river gives the design its movement; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Soft river blue against dark grey hills with fine lines of timber rafts, for a study, home office or long hallway at 16×24 in natural wood. It pairs with The Fukagawa Lumberyards, where such timber ended its journey.
