On a misty night under a pale full moon, a family crosses a plank bridge: a man carries a sleeping child on his back, a woman in a blue headscarf walks beside him, and a boy with a bundle points ahead. Behind them the trees stand as dark silhouettes, the hills fade into grey, and the river below shades to deep blue among reeds. This is print thirty-seven of The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidō, published by Hōeidō and later Kinjudō, c. 1835–38. Keisai Eisen began the series and Utagawa Hiroshige, who designed this sheet, completed it. Miyanokoshi was the thirty-sixth station on the Nakasendō, the inland road from Edo to Kyoto; the English title is descriptive, and impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
