The road squeezes through a deep ravine between steep green banks, with a stream rushing down beside it in a narrow blue channel. Woodcutters carrying bundles of brushwood climb the path, others come down toward us, and a tree with red autumn leaves stands by a thatched hut where the gorge opens to a blue sky. The print is number twenty-two in the Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, published by Hōeidō (Takenouchi Magohachi) in 1833–34. Between Mariko and Okabe, the twenty-first station, the road crossed the Utsu Pass, a narrow mountain way named in Japanese poetry since the Tales of Ise; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
