The purple drapery and gilded top of a festival float loom in the left foreground, so close that only part of it fits on the sheet, while the procession winds away uphill along a green bank with more floats rising above the crowd. Below, a curve of the castle moat and a mass of festival hats fill the bottom of the picture. The print is number fifty-one in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the seventh month of 1856. The Sannō festival of the Hie shrine was one of the two great festivals of Edo, and its procession passed into the grounds of Edo Castle. Hiroshige gives the spectacle from the side, through a single towering float; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
