Visitors stand on the yellow-painted gallery of a tall temple hall at the right, looking out over a wide green plain of rice fields toward a red horizon. Below, travellers walk along a path past low roofs and trees, and a couple of birds wheel in the sky. The print is number sixty-six in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the eighth month of 1857. The Sazaidō, at the Rakanji temple of the Five Hundred Arhats, was a multi-storey hall with a spiral interior, and its upper gallery was a famous lookout. Hokusai had shown the same balcony some twenty-five years earlier in his Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Fresh green fields with a yellow gallery and soft blue sky, for a living room, study or hallway at 16×24 in natural wood. It pairs with Hokusai's Sazai Hall at the Temple of the Five Hundred Arhats, the same lookout seen by the older master.

Size. We'd hang this one at 16×24. Prints at 12×18, 16×24 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
