A small, luminous oil in which the setting sun turns the whole of Yosemite Valley to gold, deer linger at the water's edge in the foreground and the granite walls recede into warm haze. Bierstadt painted it on paperboard in his New York studio in 1864, the year after his summer in the valley with the writer Fitz Hugh Ludlow, and it is probably his first finished Yosemite subject. He gave it to the Metropolitan Sanitary Fair in New York that April, a Civil War fundraiser for the Union Army, where it fetched 1,600 dollars, the highest price paid for any painting at the sale. The composition was reworked at a far larger scale the following year as Looking Down Yosemite Valley, California, now in Birmingham, Alabama. The sketch came to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 1947 with the Karolik Collection.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×16. Prints at 18×12, 24×16, 36×24 in — 18×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×16 above a console or sideboard; 36×24 as the statement piece above a sofa or headboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; natural wood lightens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
