A wide street lined with merchants' shops runs straight toward Mount Fuji, which floats above bands of cloud at the top of the sheet, while a busy crowd of shoppers, porters and passers-by fills the road below. The shopfronts on both sides hang dark curtains with large crests, and the converging rooflines pull the eye toward the mountain. The print is number eight in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the ninth month of 1856. Suruga-chō took its name from the province of Suruga, where Fuji stands, and the mountain could be seen at the end of its street. Hiroshige uses a strict one-point perspective of the kind Western pictures had made popular in Japan; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A white Fuji above a long grey-blue street and a crowd in small touches of green and red, for a hallway, home office or living room at 24×36 in black. It pairs with Hokusai's Shop at Surugachō in Edo, a view of the same street a generation earlier.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×36. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
