From the Molo, the quay beside the Doge's Palace, the view runs across the water to the domes of Santa Maria della Salute and the mouth of the Grand Canal, gondolas and working boats crossing the basin under a bright sky. Canaletto painted it in 1742 to 1744 as a pair with The Square of Saint Mark's, and the National Gallery of Art notes that its buyer was the Earl of Carlisle, who fitted both into the decoration of his house, Castle Howard. English gentlemen on the Grand Tour were Canaletto's most avid customers, and his detail-by-detail transcription of his native city was what they paid for. The two canvases left Castle Howard in 1938 for the collection of Barbara Hutton, who gave them to the National Gallery of Art in Washington in 1945, where they hang together in the West Building.
