A large round archery target with a gilt rim fills the left of the sheet, cut by the edge, with spent arrows lying on the grass beneath it and a dark tree trunk framing the view. Beyond, horsemen practise along the riding course among pines, with spectators at the right and a pale sky above a red horizon. The print is number one hundred and fifteen in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the second month of 1857. The Takata riding ground, north-west of the city, was used by samurai for training in horsemanship and archery. Hiroshige's huge foreground target is one of the most graphic devices in the series; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
