One Hundred Famous Views of Edo

A huge wooden cart wheel fills the right side of the sheet, and beyond it a pale rainbow arches over Edo Bay, where many ships lie at anchor. In the foreground a dog chews on scraps beside discarded slices of watermelon rind. The print is number eighty-one in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the fourth month of 1857. Ushimachi, ox town, at Takanawa on the bay south of the city, was a base for the ox carts used to haul heavy goods. Hiroshige combines the everyday details of the roadside with the wide calm of the sea; impressions vary in colour and condition.

This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.

Where it works

Soft sea blue under a pale rainbow, with a dark wheel and a small dog, for a family room, child's room or kitchen at 24×36 in natural wood. It pairs with Naitō Shinjuku in Yotsuya for two roadside scenes with animals.

Is this the whole painting, or a crop?
Very slightly cropped. This full-bleed edition prints the painting edge to edge, so a thin sliver, a few percent at most, is trimmed from two opposite edges to fit the print size. We only offer it on paintings whose proportions already come that close to the sheet. For the whole painting, uncropped, choose the gallery edition.
Is Ushimachi in Takanawa in the public domain?
Yes. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by Library of Congress.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 12×18, 16×24 and 24×36 inches; every size is also offered framed in black or natural wood, with plexiglass and no mat. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was Ushimachi in Takanawa painted, and in what medium?
Ushimachi in Takanawa dates from 1857 and was made in woodblock print; ink and color on paper; the original measures 36.3 × 24.1 cm.
What size works above a sofa or bed?
Across a three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 24×36 is the size that reads as one statement piece; 16×24 suits a narrower wall or a pair. For Ushimachi in Takanawa we'd choose 24×36.
