From high above, a vast open square spreads across the sheet, crossed by small figures on foot, and at the lower left a procession with a red umbrella and palanquin winds into view. A wooded hill with temple roofs and a red glow of mist rises at the upper right. The print is number nine in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the eleventh month of 1857. Yatsukōji, named for the many roads that met there, was a broad open space inside the Sujikai gate, one of the gates of Edo Castle's outer defences. Hiroshige leaves most of the picture as empty, pale ground, so the tiny travellers give the scale; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A pale open square with green slopes and a rose mist, for a hallway, office or long landing at 16×24 in natural wood. It pairs with Senju Great Bridge for two views of travel on the roads out of the city.

Size. We'd hang this one at 16×24. Prints at 12×18, 16×24 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
