The west front of Rouen Cathedral seen in full sunlight, its Gothic portal, gable and rose window dissolved into dabs of cream, gold, sky blue and pale pink. Monet painted more than thirty views of the façade in 1892 and 1893, working from rented rooms across the square so he could move from canvas to canvas as the light changed through the day. He finished the group in his Giverny studio in 1894, which is the date on this canvas, and in 1895 showed twenty of them at his Paris dealer's gallery, where Pissarro and Cézanne came to admire them. The series is the clearest statement of his idea that the real subject is not the building but the light on it. This version, with tiny figures at the foot of the door, belongs to the National Gallery of Art in Washington. From a distance the stone looks solid; close up it is pure colour.
