- Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji
Mount Fuji fills the sheet as a single russet triangle, its summit streaked with snow, against a blue sky of small white clouds and a dark green band of forest at the base. The Japanese title, Gaifū kaisei, describes the weather: a clear morning with a south wind, when the mountain is said to glow red in the first sun. Hokusai designed it around 1830 to 1832 for Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, published by Nishimuraya Yohachi, and it is the simplest print in the series, built from three colours and almost no line. Early impressions show a soft graded red; later ones are flatter and brighter. It is usually paired with the Great Wave as the series' two best-known images.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
