A summer walk through a poppy field near Argenteuil, where Monet settled after returning from England in 1871. A woman with a sunshade and a child, probably his wife Camille and their son Jean, come down the slope in the foreground; a second pair stands on the ridge above, and the two couples set up the diagonal that holds the whole composition together. The left half is a scatter of red, the right a cool blue-green, and the oversized poppies at the front show how far Monet was willing to push a visual impression over description. He exhibited the painting at the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874, held in the photographer Nadar's former studio. It entered the French national collections through Étienne Moreau-Nélaton's donation of 1906 and now hangs in the Musée d'Orsay, where it is among the most recognised images of the movement's early, optimistic years.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
