A pale young woman kneels at the centre of the sheet with her hands raised to her face in wonder, looking out over a blue sea toward a mountainous coast where the towers of the Monte-Carlo casino can be made out; around her, rings of lilac, hydrangea, dianthus and violets curve in great hoops that suggest both garlands and railway wheels. Mucha designed the poster in Paris in 1897 for the PLM railway company to advertise its services to the Riviera, and F. Champenois printed it. It is one of the few of his posters without a theatrical or commercial product at its heart, and the landscape is unusually open for him. The impression reproduced here, a variant of the lettering without the PLM mention, is in the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
