A young woman sits within a decorative halo with her hands outstretched, holding a red flower in her right hand, the bloom standing for nature as the painter's source of inspiration. The panel is one of four in The Arts, the series Mucha designed in Paris in 1898 and the printer F. Champenois issued as colour lithographs for framing. Instead of the usual attributes of the arts, Mucha gave each a female figure at a time of day and a natural motif: Painting with the flower, Poetry with the evening star, Music with birdsong at night and Dance with the wind in the leaves. The circular halo behind the figure, filled with patterned ornament, is the device that runs through all his decorative panels of the late 1890s. The series was among his most successful and was reissued in several formats.
