In the left half of the small panel, inside a classical loggia with a coffered ceiling, Christ is tied to a column topped by a gilded statue and scourged, while a seated figure in a tall hat looks on; in the right half, out in the open before pink and white buildings, three men stand talking, seemingly unaware of the scene behind them. Piero della Francesca signed it below the seated figure, OPVS PETRI DE BVRGO S[AN]C[T]I SEPVLCRI, the work of Piero of Borgo San Sepolcro, his home town, and it is usually dated to the later 1450s. The painting is studied for its exact linear perspective, which places the figures in a precisely measured space, and for its stillness. Its meaning is much debated: the three foreground men have been identified as Oddantonio da Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino, with his advisers, as predecessors of Duke Federico, and in other ways, and the seated watcher's hat recalls that of the Byzantine emperor John VIII Palaiologos. It hangs in the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche in the Ducal Palace at Urbino.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 18×12. Prints at 18×12, 24×16 in — 18×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×16 above a console or sideboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; natural wood lightens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
